Physical Textbooks vs. Digital Materials
**Professor Okafor:** As digital resources become more accessible, many universities are replacing physical textbooks with e-books and online materials. Some students prefer the convenience of digital formats, while others find that physical books help them learn more effectively. Which do you prefer and why? **Student A (Ingrid):** Digital materials are the clear winner. They're cheaper, searchable, and always available on your device. Highlighting and note-taking tools in e-readers are just as good as writing in a book. Plus, carrying one tablet is much easier than hauling five heavy textbooks around campus. **Student B (Sam):** I retain information much better when I read a physical book. There's something about turning pages and writing notes in the margins that helps me concentrate. Screens cause eye strain during long study sessions, and it's too easy to get distracted by notifications on a tablet. Contribute to the discussion by expressing and supporting your opinion.
The TOEFL "Writing for an Academic Discussion" task (2026 format) gives you ~10 minutes to post a reply in an online class discussion. A professor poses a question and two classmates have already answered. A high score needs a clear opinion, a developed reason, and a relevant connection to the discussion — in roughly 100+ words.
1. State your opinion + engage the discussion
1–2 sentences- Answer the professor's question directly with a clear position.
- Briefly reference a classmate's point — agree, extend, or respectfully push back.
e.g. “I see why Andrew values lower taxes, but I agree with Claire that public investment matters more.”
2. Give your main reason
1–2 sentences- Explain the reasoning behind your opinion — why do you hold this view?
- Make it specific to the discussion topic, not a generic statement.
→ “The main reason I think this is …”
3. Support with a specific example
2–3 sentences- Add a concrete example, detail, or personal observation that illustrates your reason.
- Specificity is what separates a top score from a vague one.

4. Brief closing thought
1 sentence- Wrap up with a short sentence that reinforces your position — optional but tidy.
Common Pitfalls
- Ignoring the classmates entirely. The task is a discussion — referencing another post shows you engaged with it.
- Writing too little. Aim comfortably past 100 words so your reason and example are fully developed.
